Resilience & sustainability for Brandenburg’s infrastructure

The ILB-funded RITS project is developing a process model and a technology suite to support the transformation to a “Resilient Infrastructure” (RI) in Brandenburg.

Transformation to Resilient Infrastructure (RI)

Infrastructures in Brandenburg must be designed in such a way that they can react flexibly to environmental influences and cushion the negative effects of existing systems. The focus is on the areas of energy, water and food/nutrition (EWF systems), which are of central importance for a resilient future for Brandenburg.

Brandenburg as a model region for resilience

The RITS project focuses on cross-cluster cooperation with start-ups, technology providers, research institutions and, above all, local infrastructure players as well as business and administration.

Energy companies

Renewable energies are a strong sector in Brandenburg and produce considerable amounts of electricity at peak times, which should be harnessed for a resilient infrastructure.

Water supplier

All companies in the water infrastructure sector, from extraction to transportation and supply, benefit from innovative solutions for a safe and sustainable water supply.

Agriculture

In agriculture, the focus is on the sustainable production of food, which is heavily dependent on a reliable water and energy supply.

Startups

As providers of innovative solutions, technology-oriented start-ups can make a decisive contribution to overcoming infrastructural challenges.

Research

Brandenburg research institutes are developing new technologies and approaches to increase the resilience and efficiency of physical infrastructures.

Administration

As a supporting actor, the administration plays an important role in the promotion and long-term support of sustainable infrastructure projects in Brandenburg

“We need to make our infrastructure crisis-proof and future-oriented.”

RITS – The first step towards resilience

The Resilient Infrastructure Technology Suite (RITS) research project at XU Exponential University, funded by the state of Brandenburg, aims to create a first digital and data-driven platform that records Brandenburg’s infrastructure and coordinates activities and the exchange of information between stakeholders.

Digital twin and analysis

Procedures for identifying relevant infrastructures and participants through data processing form the basis for the digital twin of Brandenburg’s infrastructure.

Technology kit for resilience

The project is developing an interoperable technology toolbox that uses technologies such as AI and blockchain to support the sustainable transformation of resilient infrastructure.

Empowerment of infrastructure participants

The project develops and tests structures, content and technologies to enable infrastructure stakeholders to actively participate in the resilient infrastructure.

Initiation of RI networks

The project will initiate specific RI networks and support participants in the implementation and use of the RI toolbox in funding projects.

Focus infrastructure areas: Energy, water, food (EWF Systems)

Energy, water and food are essential, interlinked infrastructure sectors and form the basis for social resilience. The project aims to record these sectors using data technology and to network them in a dynamic, decentralized ecosystem in order to create synergies.

Innovative technologies and decentralization: DePin as a solution

One expansion stage in the development can be on DePin, as it is already successful in the energy sector and has great potential for water and food infrastructures.

Why DePIN can support the resilience of energy, water and food infrastructure in Brandenburg

Schedule of the project

Phase 1 concentrates on requirements, data collection and networking analysis. Phase 2 focuses on stakeholder networking and empowering infrastructure operators. The entire project will run until July 2028.
